Nope, it's because Stadia/xCloud are a subscription service and each of those games could have in game purchases and because of that, unless Apple gets its 30%, it will not allow it in the App Store.

Yup and they can't leverage 30% on people streaming games as easily. I mean you'd be getting whatever games they add without an extra 30% each time

Anti competitive much.

I wouldn't mind seeing these never come to Apple devices as it might tempt users away from Apple and force them to change tack when their sales take a knock.

What will most likely happen is Google and MS will hand over a big bag of cash to Apple to allow them cause they will worry about missing potential customer base for the services and Apple wins again.

But then you will have to pay a fortune to use the services over and above Android and people will move anyhoo? Or that's supposed to be what happens…

This does seem like it's being ‘overly protective’ and has an undertone of basically Apple being unhappy that ‘better’ games will be available on their phone, without them getting a cut, meaning people won't buy their apple arcade thing.

I know we've got investigations going on but this really does scream as anticompetitive and it's very close to what got MS sanctions on windows imo.

Pretty much everywhere this is being posted has comments which are basically saying Apple are in the wrong here….

This is exactly it.

Lies and greed.

Microsoft should call their bluff and submit a list of games.

This is exactly my problem, they got out of the homogenised power and data connector enforced by the EU.

They get away with an anti consumer repair network.

They also get away with pushing a monopoly that puts their own apps or preferred apps first. Google got shafted with Google Shopping and other price comparison.

Really wish Governments would start taking Apple down a peg or three.

Yeah, and taxing them (and other companies like them) properly too wouldn't hurt either….

You forgot they got a reprieve on the fine for the Irish tax ‘scam’ recently too…. you know that minor requirement of back payment of £11.5 BILLION in taxes that they didn't pay due to backroom dealings in Ireland….

And people wonder why me and so many others don't like Apple - yet by their products in droves (there is a deliberate joke there)

I bet netflix gets a free pass because they got established before apple realised it could enforce a monopoly like this, and the majority of iphone owners would be miffed if netflix stopped working. A new use case like game streaming, OTOH…

I sorely want to use my iPad Pro to play xCloud. There is ZERO way Apple can do a “positive spin” on this. The games stream so there is no issue with their security. It's simply that users would download the free Xbox xCloud app and play. Apple Store would miss out on any revenue from all those games being played.

While I agree Apple are anti competitive and pro lock-in, I fail to see how you can successfully stand up a monopoly charge on a platform that's around 25% of the market.

If you're stuck with an iphone for the duration of your contract that doesn't matter much. The app store gets 100% of app purchases by iphone users, same way a water company might be serving a small area but it's still the only choice for anyone living there

That's a false comparison. When you first take out a contract (or buy a phone direct,) you have a choice between many different models, of which only Apples tie you into their ecosystem. At that point you can decide if you want to be locked into that ecosystem for the duration of your contract or phone ownership.

With a water company if I live in an area I have no choice at all, I either have a contract with Water Company A or I don't have water.

As do I.

But ….. I really think the blame lies with consumers.

None of us are forced to buy Apple stuff. And I haven't (since the 80's). Not because of any inherent dislike, but just ‘cos it wasn’t the right solution for my needs.

However, I am currently considering an iPad Pro, Surface Pro or even Sams7ng Tab S7 (or 7+) and therefore effectively deciding which environment to lock into, because the capital outlay, and some specific software preferences, will effectively lock me in.

Bur I do at least get to choose platform, without governments deciding what they can and can't do, and whichever way I go, it will be in full knowledge of the nature of the scorpion my frog is carrying.

The only real way to send companies like Apple a “hell no” message, IMHO, is when consumers vote, in sufficiently large numbers, with their wallets. And I have to advise …. don't hold your breath.

The bulk of consumers are either too stupid to notice or, much more likely, don't give enough of a damn.

How many will genuinely dig their heels in?

I did, over Windows 10 (or rather, at Windows 8) but personal circumstances have forced even me to give in when needs outweigh bloody-minded stubbornness.

(Still not giving in the Steam, though. I'll go to my grave first).

Note: On neither my stand against W10 or Steam was I under any illusion it would matter a damn. MS and Valve certainly won't care, and I knew there was 0% chance enough people would similarly dig in enough to force a change, even if they agreed with me. It was simply personal choice.

Not hearing a peep from the EU about this. Very strange.
