I wonder which budget psu's they used? Without the case I cannot tell, but I'm guessing probably qtec or ezcool.

Good video :)

lol! Good job I actually have a Corsair PSU then! :)

Haha, I was dissapointed by the lack of black smoke bellowing out of it :P

Not exactily perfectly controlled conditions but as said by corsair in the article - they are not trying to educate those of us that know cheap PSU's are cr@p, but those of us that think all PSU's are the same provided their peak wattage claims are the same.
HX520W owner here ;)

About three quarters of the way through after some explosions, the camera pans away a bit to what seems to look like a green box with the “Coolermaster” icon? lol liablous!
Posted by CK_1985 - Wed 16 Jul 2008 13:55
Haha, that's really rather funny…

Brought back some bad memories though - I have had a cheap PSU do exactly this within 10 minutes of first plugging it in… Got away with just a dead psu and a horrible fried-electrics-smell though, thankfully the rest of my computer survived unscathed!

And yes, that's definitely a Coolermaster logo you catch a glimpse of just at the end… although I can't recall any Coolermaster PSUs that ship in green boxes…

What happens in warranty situations when a budget failed PSU would spike and destroy something expensive in the PC?
Posted by beanbandit - Wed 16 Jul 2008 13:59
lol, having seen a few PSU's go bang i was a little disappointed by that video :) I've seen caps flying across the building, serious amounts of smoke and fried PCB's, all fun as long as your not looking over the PSU at the time :D

So, there you have it folks, Corsair claims its PSUs are guaranteed not to dramatically explode.

Not sure if thats even possible, component failure can happen in the best equipment.

is q-tec really bad? i have a 500w one that i bought from my local store for £20 :p(yes this was before i was in the know about decent psu etc, for my old rig). Its still powering along with no issue, maybe im just really lucky?

The videos more of a joke than serious so  doubt its a CM, dont nvidia green stacker cases come in that box?.

There are limits to what are budget and just lower prices, i have a xclio here with voltages good and performance is great, very reliable and so for paying alot less than corsair when i bought this i think its good. Corsair are probably the next psu i look into if i ever need one though,.

I know not of any PSU worse than Q-Tec :D unless someone can enlighten me.

That box seems to be a Chassis box not a PSU box

Coolermaster aren't that bad.

Powmax…………:)

and moogles right, the coolermaster box isn't a PSU it's a chassis, it's too big to be a PSU

Hi all. Yes, the CM box is a chassis box, not a PSU box. We're not trying to suggest ‘Brand X’ was CM. We didn't want to name the brand because we're not having a pop at anyone in particular. It was meant to highlight how cheap, low-quality PSUs in general are, well, bad.

depends. If the whole lot came as a system, its the retailer that sold you the computer's problem.
If your budget PSU exploded, destroying other PC components that weren't from the same retailer, technically you could bemand the retailer that supplied you with the budget PSU pay to get the other companents fixed.
You would however need to prove (within reason) the PSU was not fit for purpose and that you were not using it beyond its spec.

That's why you should never apply the “budget philosophy” on the important parts of a pc system.

Great vid… :D I'm glad I bought an Antec PSU.

My Corsair seems to get quite hot, and the fan never really spins faster! I hope it doesn't go pop… that would be well ironic lol

lol, my value 550w psu was £15 and has lasted 3 years. with a64 then c2d @ 3.4ghz with 8800gts. Lasted fine. still working infact. Only changed as i found a great deal for an Etasis 750w psu.

Comparing the two psus. I was occt, stress test. the cheapo, 12v dropped almost 0.5v the etasis rock solid.

i used to have one of this, that was really the same as the video…. terrible!!!

I thoroughly agree with the point being made. I also think that quality PSU’s would be more widely used if they had declined in price at the same rate as some other PC components.

Hmm, if my new HX520W from Corsair blows within the year I'm going to make a huge topic out of it for sure =P

I had a cheap PSU a few years back and in watching that video maybe I was lucky. I had a different problem that took 3 dead hard drive controllers to work out. (I changed PSU after this)

My PSU was spiking on the voltage as it could not handle the power at about 60% from memory, and killed my poor hard drives
