Oh dear, someone at Sony let the intern loose with the CAD software.
Anyone else reminded of the old VM hub?
Looks like ThermalTake tried to rip off a BitFenix case and then rejected the end result…

Yep. That's ugly! (Not that my opinion matters that much as I won't be going next gen for a long time having just built a new PC)
yeah that case design is a bit naff aesthetically at least, I suppose you can't please everyone but Microsoft's XBX I think has won the looks battle already
It'll be going in an AV cabinet so don't care about looks, just hoping that £599 isn't for the diskless version. ALthough that listing is for a 2tb model, so not sure if it's not just a placer…
4k blueray players seem to start at £150, hopefully this will not just be lumped on top of the cost of the non-digital model and help offset the cost. That was a big draw for me getting the PS3 back in the day.
Hopefully pick up a bargain PS4 Pro once it's out and bag one of these a year later :)
Maybe it's me but I have a nice tv unit where I stick my blu ray player etc in ‘holes’ and none of my stuff looks like ‘toys’ so why is it that games console keep going down the vertical route and at the same time looks like cheap toys…. some of us would appreciate a nice classy design that fits in with the rest of our media kit.
The xbox looks better but it's vertically designed and while they say you can put it on it's side I'm not sure it's the best idea.
The disc-less model makes no sense to me. For the price of what, two games, with no DLC, you're going to be at the mercy of PS store pricing for the next 5+ years? Surely swapping/borrowing/second-hand games is the only thing going for consoles these days now every game is released as a work in progress to get patched later, maybe.

Hmm no price…
They'll hold off on that, that's what killed the PS3, to an extent the Xbox One too.
“I think it is called fanboyism”
It could be because both systems are arguably the worst designs ever.

Do you mean visually? Technically I think the designs are pretty neat, they look very well balanced systems. Aesthetically.. well I would never make a games console part of my ‘look’ for a living room, they can hide away somewhere.
Some people will probably display their new console ( whatever brand ) with pride
I think if i was a console player i wouldn't like to see the machine at all, for sure that blue light on the Sony to which i have suffered a severe blue light allergy for years.
Then again i do display my PC case, and go to great lengths to make it stand out a little ( not too much cuz that it get silly too )
I am glad my next case will go down on the floor, but that dont mean it will be unseen as it is a monster size case so really no way around it, but i hope it can just be discrete monolith on the floor beside my computer table.

The PS5 can be put on its side…
Hope they do it in plain black…
And can we re-size images, that one's come out a bit big…
An enhanced version of GTA V… sounds like some low hanging fruit for rockstar. That game is a money printer for them.
I prefer the less flamboyant xbox design to be honest, i'd rather something that doesn't try to stand out from the rest of my living room.

That looks like a storm trooper who got stuck in the waster compactor unit…
I wonder if they used the same design team as Netgear do?

It's primarily designed to be vertical, you only need to look at the vent designs to see that, not to mention to get it ‘horizontal’, you still need to put it on the stand, almost like an afterthought…. still doesn't change the fact it looks like a cheap toy to me.
It looks even worse on its side…oh well!
LSG501
it looks like a cheap toy to me.
Does to me as well. Where is the nice industrial design look, that is horizontal so it fits in an AV space? This thing looks worse than some of those routers that have permeated the market.
I missed it, was their any specs?

WTF!! new XBX: a black fridge.
Free life lesson for all the vanity divas: learn to focus on the inside!

It looks terrible, I'm hoping that's because they've prioritised and succeeded in reliability and venting heat out of system.
PS5 looks like it'll have issues, again, making a generational hat trick.
Oobie-
why make 2 versions?!
So people don't pay for the cost of a 4k blu-ray drive if they're not going to use it.
Most PC gamers use digital distribution,so a cheaper version with no optical drive,is a good idea IMHO.

True this, I've not had a DVD/CD-Rom in my PC for 7 years, and the PC before this one did have one but I hadn't used it in years!

Options are good. Each route is likely to appeal to some people and the only real issue, assuming the manufacturer doesn't have strategic reasons for one or the other, is if “some” people is enough to justify the extra product line. That Sony are doing it suggests they think it does.
Personally, I like owning things though and paying a one-off cost, not a subscription …. for mot things, at least.
Re: PS5 it's probably academic for mee if that £600 price-tg rumour is correct as I don't envision paying that for a games console. Which is a shame. Maybe a discounted PS4 if stock gets dumped when the 5 comes out. Maybe.
EDIT - not entirely the ugliest device I've seen, but I'd FAR prefer something less showy, less in yer face.
I'd still take the drive as I prefer physical media. Recent events proves that digital media can disappear at a whim (not looking to get into a debate here) and not everyone has good internet access even though some day 1 patches are 50GB plus these days.
I believe that digital only distribution will become more prevalent with the next gen along with the games as a service model being pushed more.
I will hold off for a couple of hardware revisions before I consider this or the Xbox Series X though.

It would be a good idea if the games on Sony store weren't so expensive! they stay at RRP forever.
Alas, it's simply ridiculous. That simply doesn't go with any home entertainment kit. And the design makes it look like it'll overheat or underclock drastically.
Microsoft got the design right with there's. Proper massive cooling and it'll fit right in with my big ass Amp and the other blackness of my kit.
