DuckDuck Go modified for my prefs.

Startpage, similarly:

Both UK-orientated.
Bing is good for suggestions.
Google - avoid direct use, obviously.

Bing recently, when I discovered just how many sites Google was clearly deliberately blocking and not showing. Google for tech though.
Posted by Output - Fri 14 Feb 2020 17:06
Primarily DuckDuckGo, so that my searches stay as private as possible, and don't get used to tailor my future search results based on past searches or activity.

Any other search engine usage is usually to see if there are any results that DDG missed if I can't seem to find the answer to what I'm looking for in its own search results.

I've been using Bing for years now and much prefer it to google, especially the Bing image search.

Just Google

Primarily Bing and some DuckDuckGo as well. Bing seems pretty good for UK searches

Very similar to Giraffe (without having compared prefs)

1. DDG
2. Startpage
.
.

3. Very rarely … Bing

999,999,999 Universe Explodes
1,000,000,000 Google. Assuming I can access da net if I can access it via Heavenly (or Infernal, depending on well, you know) Broadband.

PS. Note, not a Google fan. Detest them. Would give up internet first.

PPS. I don't even use DDG that much, ‘cos I don’t search net for much at all. Sometimes weeks go by and I don't even use a net-connected computer.

I've given DuckDuckGo a trial numerous times, but find the answers I'm looking for are always of poor quality and sadly find myself back on Google for the results I'm looking for.
Bing is just a joke especially when I'm searching for Microsoft's own technical stuff, again Google gives me the higher quality results and the best returns from Microsoft's own websites, ironic!

So for me it's still Google, as much as I hate their privacy and ads.
An ad blocker is a must for Google search.

I used to use Google's shopping search religously, but since they forced everyone to pay to be included on the list it's gone massively downhill. I forget it even exists most of the time.

DuckDuckGo on main system and if I think about it.
Google out of laziness.
Bing is Bung (ie. broken) so it's avoided like the plague.
Posted by whatif - Sat 15 Feb 2020 01:59
Duckduckgo mostly.
Sometimes have to use Google or Bing to get better results, but always with a VPN
Posted by Corky34 - Sat 15 Feb 2020 08:16
Startpage as it's mostly a proxy for google without the privacy invasion, occasionally searx for metasearches, despite trying different search engines unfortunately google still seems to get better results, DDG's great on privacy but their results are poor, Bing is just as bad as Google in terms of privacy but with worse results.

What do you use now for shopping results? I ask because IDK that they're making people pay now and i guess that explains why i can't find what I'm looking for any more when trying to find non-computer related shopping stuff.

What do the DDG modifications do?
Posted by =assassin= - Sat 15 Feb 2020 13:26
I use Google mostly, but Bing on some things, probably less than 10% of the time though compared to Google.
Posted by FRISH - Sat 15 Feb 2020 14:13
Google. Mostly out of habit. Recently I've had trouble with certain thing though. For example I tried looking up the PS5 announcement date, Google struggles, while bing gives it right away and provides more relevant results. It seems like google has a strong preference for more recent topics.
Posted by meuvoy - Sat 15 Feb 2020 16:36
Google and Windows search only. Really don't care about ads on google.

It's an absolute shame to have to admit I mostly shop on Amazon or eBay for day to day items.
A lot of the smaller sites have diminished these days or the sellers have now moved exclusively to those platforms.
Also what I'm finding is most items we buy now are from dropshippers. This means we have a surge of brands that don't meet traditional price checking websites.
For example buying a multiway adapter on Amazon means trawling through tonnes of dropshippers, it's actually becoming a huge chaotic mess. Brands that are really sub brands of a manufacturer pouring these things out

What do the DDG modifications do?
Select language, number of hits, filters etc. (can't search for some clinical terms with Safe Search on - that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!).

duckduckgo and google

usual stuff ;)
Posted by SlickR - Sun 16 Feb 2020 17:38
bing.com for porn, duckduckgo for almost everything, occasionally google if duckduckgo doesn't give me the required results.
Posted by rich835 - Mon 17 Feb 2020 13:05
Google logged in with a bogus account.
Sometimes I'll open an in-private window before I search for certain things ;-)

Ducks or Bing (trying to get max points almost daily, for those gift card rewards). Google as a last resort. But I only do Bing in the (new) Edge, since they're already tracking it, while the ducks go in FF.
Posted by krane - Mon 17 Feb 2020 14:26
I use Bing on my computer.
Posted by CozaMcCoza - Mon 17 Feb 2020 14:44
Bing because I can build points to get free vouchers. Unless I'm having real difficulty, there is very little difference between the different search engines

DuckDuck Go
Posted by FatLes12 - Mon 17 Feb 2020 16:01
I still use Google as it's the most convenient - it always seems to know what I'm looking for
Posted by johnniedoo - Mon 17 Feb 2020 20:04
duck duck go for over a year maybe a little longer. a rare return to google for specific items. of if DDG seems lacking.

Just Google Chrome…
Posted by Lord Midas - Tue 18 Feb 2020 08:06
DuckDuckGo for general searches. Bing for images.
Posted by jonah - Tue 18 Feb 2020 08:40
duckduckgo. Google is heavily doctored and tracks everything you do.
Posted by johnneo - Tue 18 Feb 2020 10:20
Have used duck duck purely for privacy but not as comprehensive as others and find it biased towards us sites even when select uk. Also when select uk it does not stay as default. Also use bing.

That's a web browser. Or did you just mean Google's search engine because you use Chrome?
Posted by Kalaminator - Tue 18 Feb 2020 14:21
Google. I don't know, I never had the need to use any other search engine, and I don't like Bing for some reason.

Google but I have been using Bing a lot more recently.

DDG for personal, Google for work.

Also fall back to google for more advanced/deeper searches. DDG is good enough most of the time, but clearly not as good as Google.

Have started using Firefox temporary containers which helps curtail Google a bit.
Posted by Sumanji - Thu 20 Feb 2020 23:53
On PC I use DDG as my default search engine (in Firefox), as part of my efforts to gradually de-Googlify. It works well for about 80% of searches, but for the balance I end falling back to Google… it's just better :shocked2:

On Mobile I use FF and DDG also, but end up using Google a lot more (through the app on Android)… this thread has actually prompted me to think about how to use the Google app less…

I use almost always DuckDuckGo. Only rare I use Bing. Never Google.

Google.

Yes, it's the big evil thingy. Oh, the horror.

I use DuckDuckGo once in a blue moon - usually when I fancy a scenic route (via the occasional cul de sac) to the information I require. I like the premise, but it's still a bit crap.
