Given the amount of money they've made from Rocket League, you'd think they could continue to run some legacy private servers for the unsupported platforms - essentially patch in a set of “legacy” server IP addresses in the final patch that just tick over and run for the community.

This kind of “let it die” attitute to online-only (for the most part) games shows a dreadful lack of understanding of the significance of games as a longterm medium.

It wouldn't surprise me if they decided it was an opportunity to save the money if it can run via Proton without them dedicating resources to do it natively.

Sad, this ran silky smooth on linux. Native linux support will be missed.

That's a pretty crummy move, really. Maybe Mac/Linux sales aren't as high as Switch/PS4/etc., but it's kind of expected that if you launch support for a platform in a game, you're going to continue supporting it. And with over 10 million sales (across all platforms), I can't imagine it would bankrupt them to continue providing support. Writing this as a developer with some understanding of the complexity of supporting multiple platforms.

It would definitely make me hesitant to buy any Psyonix (and, to a lesser extent, Epic) game for Mac or Linux in the future.

Refunds will be issued for macOS and Linux Players:

“If you play Rocket League on macOS or Linux and want a refund for the base game, please follow these steps:

>Go to the Steam Support website

>Select Purchases

>Select Rocket League (you may need to select “View complete purchasing history” to see it)

>Select I would like a refund, then I'd like to request a refund

>From the Reason dropdown menu, select My issue isn’t listed

>In notes, write Please refund my Mac/Linux version of Rocket League, Psyonix will be discontinuing support

If this process does not work for you, please contact Valve via their ticket system, select Rocket League, then “I have a question about this purchase,” and they will manually start the refund process from there.”

Fair play to them for at least offering the Refunds as an option.

That post also includes some of their reasons for dropping the support, apparently Mac & Linux combined only represents less than 0.3% of their active player base and they say that the upcoming improvements and new features (including updating to DirectX 11 from 9, switch to 64-bit) mean the additional investment required (as well as for an ongoing basis), as the Native implementations rely on their DirectX 9 implementation, would be too significant, especially when “viable workarounds exist such as Bootcamp and Wine to keep those users playing”.

So that does seem to suggest to me that they think Proton would most likely do the trick for running it from here onwards.
