I am feeling the gravity of consoles strong lately. Right now you can buy 3 consoles in the price of “enthusiast” lvl Graphic card.
Key is the word “brand”. If Nintendo had named all their systems SNES 1/2/3/4 etc they'd be ahead. The Wii outsold the PS3 and Xbox 360 combined IIRC.
I wonder if the DS/3DS had been sold under the Game Boy brand, which one would be ahead. Though I do note that the original Game Boy was released 5 years before the PS (now that I think about it, I am surprised - I feel like the PS came out much later).
Brand does seem key - the original Playstation(s) had little competition from the current gen. brands. It was up against the N64 and the Saturn; Microsoft weren't even in the game back them.
I'm sure if you added up all the aggregated sales of Nintendo consoles (maybe even excluding the handheld ones…) you'd get a comparable number.
EDIT: Maybe not… Just added up sales figured (from Wikipedia) for NES, SNES, N64,GC,Wii, WiiU, and Switch - only 324 million between them!
EDIT 2: Though the handheld sales blows it out of the water - 440m.
Oh great. I've just realised the PS1 was released 25 years ago.
The console makers must have some massive strangle hold on the chip makers to keep the prices low. Not a single rise during the Crypto madness yet it put a massive talespin on the PC market that may never recover.
