Interesting layout. Might be worth a punt. Perhaps not that great for myopia, though.

One day, someday, one of the big players will actually make a decent handset with a removable battery & which still gets OS updates at almost the same time as Pixels.

Don't like the coloured backs (seems like a magnet for thieves imo) but for some reason I kind of like the form factor idea, although I also kind of wish it was little less long, maybe 3/4's as long.

Then again I kind of like the mini palm phone too, maybe it's more to do with the fact I don't want a phone that's the size of a small tablet lol

Quite agree, I just cant get my head around how that form factor will work though. Will be very interested to see it in reviewers hands but I suspect we're a long way off from that day. Also I sincerely hope that Rubin & his gang have learnt from their mistakes with the PH-1 and that the actual hardware is not substandard again.

Finally I would have thought that having a phone in that format will mean some major adaptions to the basic OS and seeing that one of the best points of the PH-1 was stripped down software I'm not sure how this will play to Essential's strengths.

One thing for sure though is it will be interesting.

I think next step for smartphones can be exactly the no-formfactor phones…
Todays models have reached their limits.. bigger is not better anymore, and they all look the same…
So this is brave move towards more interesting and personalized future in portable smart-device market…

I agree to a point. I really don't mind them trying and seeing what works but my concern is more around the app support for the aspect ratio. Being such a small company with such a small market share, it's unlikely that devs will even consider them when designing software.

I assume you have to do something on top of Android, as i don't think it support such a “massive” departure from the normal screen ratio / resolutions.
And i really don't like when companies force some GUI on people, actually i don't like being forced to do anything,,,, which are fortunate cuz that ended my criminal career when i was young and stupid, cuz i am sure me and prison don't go well together.

Anywho i welcome this new perspective on things, and i can personally do very fine with a “just phone” phone.
