…..and the latest DirectX 10.1 graphics engine."

Furthermore, S3 Graphics even claim the card outperforms the current market leader in its class by over 20% in 3D benchmarks.

Dont read that as “20% faster than a 9800GX2” their market rivals are the low end cards, like a 7300GT.

i imagine a mobile version of this card would be quite successful in laptops - assuming its good

A chip like that could be pretty good for mobile phones if they could get it small enough as well as the mentioned laptops.

Its disappointing that there is a fan on it and not just a heatsink like many nVidia 7300, 7600 + various ATI cards.

We also now know who Intel can buy in order for them to play a bit of catch up.

Sounds good to me.

If it works well with media center type applications and is keenly priced, I can see it gaining a following in that market. Especially if they bundle the low profile back plates with it too.

Maybe, but Intel's apparently been scooping up S3, ATi and nVidia employees left right and centre.

That being said, the 430 GT, the card S3 are launching now is competing with the 3450/8400 GS and apparently does a damn fine job of it. There's also supposed to be a 440 and 460 which should be closer performance wise to the 8500 GT/2600 Pro and 8600 GTS respectively if all is well, which I hope it is.
