The word latter typically means the second of two people, things, or groups previously mentioned. Not three things.
More commonly, yes, but not entirely… A common misunderstanding and one I occasionally like to exploit myself when I want to pretend like I'm an
auteur or something! :p

2. denoting the second or second mentioned of two people or things.
- “While the former is less expensive, the latter is less risky”
Both are correct. So while HEXUS articles could often do with a spellcheck and proof-read, they are correct in this instance. :)
