Gamers who have downloaded leaked versions of the eagerly awaited Halo: Reach could face a ban from Xbox Live if they are caught playing the title online.

Microsoft's director of policy enforcement for the online gaming platform, Stephen Toulouse said in a Twitter post: "As with all unauthorized play on Xbox Live, anyone playing any unauthorized title runs the risk of account 'permaban."

According to Joystiq, Halo: Reach games enthusiasts at Game-Tut managed to break into Microsoft's servers, which were holding the full version of the new game for media to try with an access code and then leaked the files to the public a couple of weeks ago.

There were also reports of another leak, the net result being unauthorised versions doing the rounds ahead of the game's official launch on 14 September.

Toulouse reportedly warned that while legitimately purchased copies of the game will leave gamers in no risk of being banned, Microsoft has ways of knowing if people are playing illegally leaked games on Xbox Live. However, there are seemingly no reports of anyone being banned yet.
