Beta breakthrough?

Apple's iPhone developer community has got its hands on the second private beta of iOS 4.1, designed to remedy remaining glitches on the iPhone 4, according to an unofficial Apple blog.

Apple has made the software, reportedly called iOS 4.1 beta 2 build 8B509B available for the iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G and iPod Touch 2nd and 3rd generations.

The eagerly anticipated release is predicted to fix proximity sensor malfunctions which have plagued the new handset.  Users reportedly complained the sensor does not turn off the phone's touch screen when the device is pressed against the ear during a phone call, consequently allowing the user to accidently putting callers on hold, switching on speakerphone and FaceTime or simply hanging up.

Steve Jobs acknowledged the sensor problems in Apple's impromptu press conference a couple of weeks ago and said his team was working on fixing the glitches as part of the next operating system update.

The first beta of iOS 4.1 was said to feature the functionality to add FaceTime numbers to favourites, tweaks to the camera app that reposition the flash, plus a revamped version of the phone's modem firmware and reworked version of GameCenter.

Apple's iOS 4, which brought multitasking to iPhone 4 and 3GS phones, is reportedly now powering half of all iPhones.
