There were no less than 11 new products or price drops introduced to Intel's processor price list yesterday.

These included new top-end CPUs for the (non-extreme) Core i7 and Core i5 families and the near halving of the price of the Core i7-870. There's also a new low-power version of the 870 - the 870S.

Elsewhere we have a couple of additions to the Atom family, targeted at small form-factor desktops - or nettops as Intel likes to call them.

AMD is finally gearing up to the launch of its ‘fusion' APUs, which any industry neutral will hope give Intel a run for its money in the mobile computing space.

While AMD is focused on that, Intel may be looking to consolidate its position in the desktop market - a traditional strength for AMD.

E6600 …unless that's a different E6600 to my Core2Duo @ 2.4Ghz, is that line correct?

I think it must be. It's listed as a Pentium too, so your CPU is presumably not on the list any more.
Intel have a CPU nomenclature that's the reverse of Nvidias, give two different products the same name.

There are Pentium versions of most of the C2D Exxxx series now.

Intel … give two different products the same name.

That's not strictly accurate: there was a “Core 2 Duo E6600”, and now there's a “Pentium Dual Core E6600”. See, the majority of the name is different… ;)
I look forward to these trickling down to retail :)

In the meantime, i7-870S review HEXUS? :p
