A major UK retailer has hinted the next generation iPod Touch could boast HD video capture plus a front facing camera, making the iPhone's FaceTime video-chatting feature possible.

According to John Lewis, the iPod touch will include a 5MP flash-enabled camera with the ability to shoot HD videos, much like its popular iPhone peer, ElectricPig reported

At its Xmas in July event, the retailer reportedly said the new spec details came from whispers from its suppliers and will no doubt excite Apple fans, who may also be hoping the new iPod shares the iPhone 4's impressive Retina display too.

It seems likely the next iPod Touch will also have a front-facing camera, reportedly allowing users to use FaceTime, making free calls via Wi-Fi to other iPhone 4 or new iPod owners.

The retailer's claims have been strengthened when alleged parts of Apple's new device popped up on the web.  Two parts which are claimed to be from the fourth generation iPod Touch are listed on a B2B trading platform, including an outside panel and screen. Another seller also shows the casing, with a hole above the screen, again hinting at a front-facing camera allowing FaceTime video chats...if it is really a part from Apple's new product.

John Lewis also reportedly said the iPod's gaming power will be boosted by the addition of an accelerometer and gyroscope allowing for more sensitive and complex games, again borrowing technology from the iPhone 4.

However, iPod fans desperate to get their mitts on the next model will have to wait until September, when the annual iPod refresh is scheduled, to see if the rumours prove true.

im sure it will be a big hit…
Not really surpirsing, as iPod Touch models have always been just the previous iphone without phone bits.

New iPod Touch = iPhone 4 without phone (or high res screen?)
They can't make the iPod too similar to the iPhone in features otherwise people notice how overpriced the iPhones are. I'm sceptical that it'll have the decent screen this time around.

And iPods aren't overpriced????

Personally in a world featoring iPhones I reckon iPods are a bit pointless, voice and data are killer apps for iPods, oh yeah then you have an iPhone… why carry a phone and a pod, waste of pocket.

* Personally I use an alternative all in once device of Finnish origins, haven't needed more than 1 device for years.
my signature should show my view…
