Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 Series has bags of potential, but like so many other Microsoft products, it arrived with a name that didn't quite roll off the tongue.

Fortunately, the folks at Redmond have responded to the criticism by promptly renaming its upcoming make-or-break mobile platform as "Windows Phone 7".

The announcement was made by Microsoft's official Windows Phone Twitter account, via which the company stated that it is "dropping the ‘Series’ and keeping the 'Windows Phone 7.'"

A step in the right direction, we reckon, but for continuities sake, perhaps Windows Mobile 7 would have been the correct branding. Though, we can understand Microsoft's desire to cover up any link between Windows Phone 7 and what came before it.

Microsoft's decision to shorten its product name should come as no surprise. Though the company has a history of cramming words together - namely popular brands such as Microsoft, Windows or Office - it has in recent years taken a different approach with brands such as Xbox, Zune and Bing.
