Display development

Western Digital launched its latest external hard drive for Macs today - the My Passport Studio - and it has tried something a bit different by giving it an e-paper display that stays on even when the drive is disconnected.

E-paper technology is non-backlit and uses a fraction of the power of an LCD. As well as offing information about the capacity and remaining storage of the HDD, the e-label smart display can be customized using some bespoke WD software to offer information about what's stored on the drive without having to access it.

The My Passport Studio drives come in 320, 500 and 640GB capacities. They don't seem to be available in the UK, and WD hasn't advised UK pricing, by you can currently buy the previous generation 320GB version - without e-paper display - for £90. The new one costs $150 in the US so hopefully there won't be too much of a hike.

WD is already offering this display on the desktop versions of this drive - the MyBook Studio - and the PC version - the MyBook Elite - both of which are available in the UK, so we don't expect the PC version of the My Passport with e-paper display to be too far behind.
