It's been no secret that Sony loses money every time it sells a PlayStation 3 console, but now president Kaz Hirai has now confirmed that things aren't about to change when they release the recently announced PlayStation Slim.

Speaking with The Times Online, Hirai was asked whether Sony would take a loss each time it sold a console. Hirai responded:

“If you’re just talking about the hardware alone, the quick answer is yes.

“I think the better indicator is to look at the business as a whole platform, to ask: are you profitable in terms of the hardware, software and peripherals. And the answer to that question is yes on a gross profit level since the last fiscal year.”

One of those money-spinning peripherals that Hirai is talking about is the “magic wand” motion control system, which has now been confirmed for release next year. Let's hope it'll do more with it than it did with the PlayStation Eye.

Sony will also be hoping to claw some of that money back with some of the upcoming PS3 exclusives such as Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain and Gran Turismo 5 and will hope to sell some of this year's PS3 exclusives, including Killzone 2 and inFamous, to the new legion of PS3 Slim early adopters.

How come they lose money? Didnt they do their maths that to build a PS3 will cost £10, so if we want £5 profit in our pocket, we should sell it for £15?

They did different maths - lose $5 per console but make $10 per sold game instead. If each console has an attach rate of say 10 games then they're still making $95 per console sale, so it's worth the cut in price if you make any additional sales as a result.
 they are going to love me with my GT5 permanently in the machine

They also did the maths of, sell console at break even, no bugger buys it, no one buys the games. Better to sell at a loss rather than not sell at all.
yeh, risky business but it will pay off, specialy now that blue ray is also the standard, pretty good price on p3's considering the tech u get.
