Following leaked videos earlier this week, the hype surrounding Microsoft's Zune HD portable media player is picking up pace - and so it should, as big-name retailers have today suggested that the NVIDIA Tegra-powered handset will appear in under a month.

According to Amazon.com, the handset will make its U.S. debut on September 8th with prices at $219.99 and $289.99 for 16GB and 32GB models, respectively. The capacities, pricing and launch date are also seemingly confirmed by a leaked snapshot of a BestBuy inventory obtained by Gizmodo.com.

Amazon's listing suggests that the 16GB variant will be available in black, whilst the larger 32GB model will appear in platinum. A 64GB model has been rumoured to be in the pipeline, but we've yet to see any real confirmation.

What's interesting is that Amazon states that the Zune HD will allow users to "browse, stream, buy, and play all you want, including music, HD video, podcasts, games, and much more," suggesting that games - perhaps ported from Xbox Live Arcade - will be available via the handset.

Eagle-eyed readers will also note that the listed prices are far lower than an iPod touch. Apple's premium player currently fetches $299 and $399 for 16GB and 32GB models, respectively.

There's still no word of Zune HD availability in Europe, but, if you're listening Microsoft, the handset launches a day after my birthday so feel free to send one my way.

Better Screen, Lower Price, Better Battery Life.

I don't know why, but i don't believe it.
Sounds too good to be true, but then I think a lot of us said that about Windows 7 when the hype started… ;)

Not that I'll be buying a Zune of any description as long as my Trusty SPV M600 holds out…
Agree with the above, that seems to be an awful lot for a relatively cheap price (compared to icompetition). If it does prove to be true, thats gunna be a real winner! :)
I wouldn't be surprised if it's been sold at (or even below) cost in order to build marketshare.

Microsoft lost money on the Xbox for many years but has managed to build up a fair bit of marketshare. Wouldn't be surprised to see exactly the same here!

Very true, sell at a loss to create a reputation and then you get crap loads of sales for other items e.g. fore the 360 its all the games that make the money. For the player it would probs be the music etc.

I really want one of these but i doubt it would be released here :(
