CPU giant Intel has announced it's shelling out $12 million on a new visual computing research centre at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Germany.

In announcing the investment Justin Rattner, Intel CTO conceded the high priority Intel is putting on the graphics side of things. "Intel has collaborated with the world-class researchers at Saarland University in visual computing for a number of years," he said

"Given the growing importance of visual computing technology, it made perfect sense to expand our relationship and form this new institute. We are confident that it will become an internationally recognized centre and a driver for European leadership in the visual computing field."

While this is a further statement of intent from Intel to take on incumbents NVIDIA and AMD in the graphics, there was no mention of Intel's big parallel processing project, codenamed Larrabee.

With the investment to be strung out over five years, this appears to be more of a long term look into the potential applications of visual computing. Here's a slide showing how Rattner sees visual computing fitting into the broader trend within the computing industry.
