Buy stuff before it’s too late!
It looks like the days of Mac users not having to worry about viruses and assorted other cyber-smelliness are over as even Apple itself is saying it's time for them to protect themselves.
The short post made on 21st November on Apple's support site reads more like a sales pitch in which Apple advises users to buy Symantec's Mac security product or one made by Mac security specialist Intego (which has apparently been in business since 1997), by going to the Apple Store, which it helpfully hyperlinks to.
Apple also mentions McAfee, which you can't buy through the Apple Store, presumably just to prove it's not just trying to drive business to its partners through its own store. This could mean a new revenue stream for the channel.
There's no mention of any specific new threats that have prompted Apple to urge Mac users to go on this security software spending spree, but as the Mac has grown in popularity it's not unreasonable to assume that cyber-scoundrels might consider the Mac to now be a viable target, where in the past they might not have bothered.
