Mozilla recently ran an extend Firefox 3 contest to find the very best extensions for its flagship browser, and the results are in.

The winners, broken down into three categories; best new add-on, best updated add-on and best music add-on, were chosen by a panel of six judges.

Mozilla states that "many of these extensions are in their early stages of experimental development, however we have seen some powerful new tools and prototypes that we are excited to share."

So, without further ado, the winners are:

Best New Add-on

Best Updated Add-on

Best Music Add-on

  • Fire.fm by Jorge Villalobos and Jose Enrique Bolaños - Direct access to the extensive music library on Last.fm

If you're new to Firefox and you're looking for extensions to try, these are clearly highly recommended.

For a comprehensive breakdown of the winners, and a list of runners up, head on over to the official Mozilla blog.

They forgot “Best addon ever”. Which would be Firebug.
I can't do without my eBay companion thing, IE Tab, Video Download Helper and All in one sidebar, personally.
adblock plus with this subscription is by far the best

I am sure web admins love you!

I prefer to take a more moderate approch, and use Flashblock. It does not block all adverts, just the annoying flickering and CPU eating flash ones. I think that is fairer on web masters, as that way they know that their adverts can be seen if they don't use annoying ones.

I think the situation is similar to pop up blockers that these days most people use. Only the most disreputable websites use popups theses days, and most people would agree that it is fair for users to block them. I think that it is reasonable to block animated flash adverts for similar reasons.

I don't mind seeing other adverts, and will click on them if they are for a product that I am interested it, but I object to them when they become overly distracting, or max out my CPU causing it to become hot and noisy.
Wot no PicLens :surprised:
