EA revamping Monopoly board game for consoles

Just how exactly do you turn one of slowest board games known to man into an exciting video game? We're about to find out...

Electronic Arts will be re-inventing Hasbro's Monopoly franshise for next-gen consoles with the launch of a new title inspired by the upcoming release of the board game, MONOPOLY HERE & NOW: The World Edition.

EA's casual entertainment label has promised that Monopoly will appeal to players of all ages and skill levels and will feature a 4-player muliplayer mode allowing the family to play together.

In order to speed up the board game, they'll be a new faster style of game-play and also short mini-games.EA also tell us that you'll be able to unlock a range of never before seen Monopoly boards.

“EA is taking MONOPOLY’S core gameplay and bringing it to life in a way never before imagined,” said Chip Lange, Vice President and General Manager of EA’s Casual Label. “With this dynamic take on Hasbro’s classic board game, we’ve accelerated the pace of play, added new interactive mini-game sequences and integrated multi-player moments designed to make MONOPOLY a non-stop party for the whole family.”

Let's not go over the top, eh Chip?

Sounds interesting, though I'm guessing it still won't be as enjoyable as I found Monopoly Tycoon to be.

Monopoly needs to be an Xbox Live Arcade title, that would be ideal! Come to think of it, Live Arcade could do with more board game-based titles.

Yeah! I played the GBA version and it sucked, but on live it could be interesting, web cam and all.

This is all very well and good but I have some questions. Will it allow you to cheat? Will it also allow you to bend the rules enough to keep the peace (when your nephew is getting really ratty that he's running out of money and you don't want to cause too much grief)?

That was half the fun in the real board game and paper money. Constantly keeping an eye on everything the other players were doing and especially so with the banker (usually me). The electronic version (the one with that card reader) really spoiled a lot of that fun.

I agree.

I used to hide a certain amount of money in my pocket from the beginning of the game and add some more to it as the game progressed. I would then play on and make sure that everyone sees the rest of my money, and so therefore assume I was doing crap. When everyone thought I was on the verge of bankruptcy I would gleefully take out £3000 :mrgreen: at which point I would start building hotels like a lunatic. However this strategy never worked when I was younger, everyone thought I had stolen the money from the bank!
