The news

Pioneer will be launching in spring a rather interesting combi optical drive - one that reads Blu-ray Disc and also burns and reads DVDs and CDs.

The BDC-202, first unveiled at CES and due in the second quarter of the year, is an internal PC drive - with an ATAPI/IDE parallel ATA connector, rather than serial ATA, we're assuming.

It's reckoned to let you "watch pristine quality high-definition (HD) movies on PCs" - though this will require a suitable graphics card and player software - and to offer the read/write speeds detailed below (no mention made of CD writes, though):

No pics are available still - but one internal optical drive looks much like another - and no clues as yet on pricing.

However, we'd guess that the BDC-202 - which is said to be aimed at OEMs and systems builders - will be considerably more affordable than Pioneer's BDR-101A Blu-ray Disc burner, which goes out for over Ā£500 (inc VAT).
