Qnap's rapidly expanding family of NAS solutions has picked up another member in the form of the TS-453Bmini.

Now available with prices starting at Ā£460, the new addition to the firm's award-winning range adopts a vertical form factor promising the performance and feature set of a traditional Qnap NAS in a "compact and user-friendly chassis."

The four-bay box measures 210mm (H) x 151mm (W) x 200mm (D) in size and the smaller footprint is enabled by four vertically-mounted 2.5/3.5in drive trays. Getting access to said bays is as simple as pulling away the magnetic top cover and Qnap has adopted tool-free trays to ensure maximum ease of use. Quiet cooling and adjustable LEDs are also part of the design, as is front-facing USB 3.0, and whereas most NAS solutions are intended to be kept out of sight, the TS-453Bmini is styled to sit neatly in the home or small office.

There's little risk of the unit favouring style over substance, as Qnap equips the base model with 4GB of memory and a quad-core Intel Celeron J3455 processor touting AES-NI encryption and full support for 4K UHD video transcoding. An 8GB model will also be available, while a removable cover on the base of the unit provides easy access to the DIMM slots, allowing for simple user upgrades.

Connectivity options on the back of the TS-453Bmini include a further three USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0, dual Gigabit Ethernet and HDMI output supporting 4K UHD playback at 30Hz. Additional storage, if needed, is available via optional Qnap expansion units, and the NAS runs the latest 64-bit version of Qnap's popular operating system, QTS 4.3
