ASUS's original decision to lock down the Transformer Prime's bootloader didn't go down particularly well with those who like to tinker with their tablet. So much so that the manufacturer announced that it would release an unlocking tool for those who crave such things.

We were told to expect the bootloader unlock tool by the end of February, and with a couple of days to spare, it has now surfaced as a 622-kilobyte download on the Transformer Prime support page (you'll find it under Android, Utilities).

The tool can only be used to unlock TF201 tablets that have been upgraded to Android 4.0, and ASUS is keen to point out a couple of provisos. Choose to take the unlocked route and your product will no longer be covered by warranty, and you'll no longer receive ASUS software updates.

A small price to pay if the right ROM comes along? Only time will tell, but if you do happen to unlock your Transformer Prime bootloader, let us know how you get on in the comments section below.

surely you could reflash back to stock rom and the warranty will be honoured?

First thing that crossed my mind! :)

Article seems to imply that merely unlocking your bootloader will invalidate the warranty - so even if you don't subsequently slap on a copy of Cyanogen9 on the Transformer, you'll be “on your own”.

That said, I'm not sure how easy it'd be to lock that b/l back up again … ;)
