OCZ doubles 4K random write IOPS in Octane-series SSDs

Recently, HEXUS reviewed OCZ's 128GB Octane SDD drive, where we found the drive to be a strong competitor with consistent performance across all file-types, let down primarily by poor write performance, with comparatively abysmal 4k random write IOPS.

It appears as though OCZ took note of the drive's shortcomings and has issued the new v1.13 firmware, which looks to roughly double 4k random write IOPS across the entire Octane range.

Old Random Write 4K IOPS (FW v1.12) New Random Write 4K IOPS (FW v1.13)
Octane 122GB 7,700 18,000
Octane 256GB 12,000 25,000
Octane 512GB 16,000 26,000

If OCZ can continue to pull stunts like these in its driver updates, then the Octane-series will have a bright future indeed. For now though, one of the series' greatest bottlenecks has been considerably widened.

Although this is good news for any owners of these drives, you have to really wonder why OCZ released the drive with such a flaw in the first place.

To get to market quicker!

I've no problem with firms releasing products when they know they can do much better with a firmware update, so long as they supply the update.

No product is ever really finished in the rapidly changing tech world, I just wish more people understood that with software!

Personally I'd like to see reviews of the new firmware, just to check that it doesn't fix the write issue at the expense of performance elsewhere.

Same, but only from an enthusiast point of view. It's not as simple if the drives are shipped in assembled systems for an ‘average’ user. But then, how many average users would have an SSD in the first place…

You know, when I read in the article about a bright future and saw the orange label, I couldn't help thinking, the future's orange… :p

Alas our review model has been returned already =( If we ever get our hands on one again we'll be sure to update results, meanwhile a dedicated storage review website may have one laying around with any luck!
