We have seen and heard about the Acer Iconia W4 before; it was seen at an Intel event in September. Now new information points to the upgraded and improved version of the Iconia W3 being launched early in 2014. Also, since our last story about the Iconia W4, Acer has uploaded an official promo video for the device and listed then delisted the device on its web site.

The main headlining improvements with the Acer Iconia W4 design, the successor to the Iconia W3, are that it will pack a 1.33GHz Intel Bay Trail Atom Z3740 processor and is said to fix one of the biggest complaints about the Iconia W3 by the inclusion of an IPS screen.

Other specs expected to grace the Iconia W4 are 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage (microSD card expandable) and a 1280 x 800 pixel display. The quad-core SoC features Intel HD graphics acceleration. Wi-Fi standards 802.11a/b/g/n are supported as is Bluetooth communication. It has a 5MP main camera and a 2MP front facing snapper and a micro-HDMI port to connect to bigger screens. Battery life is expected to be around 8 hours thanks to the 4,960mAh battery. Acer’s 430g device measures just over 10mm thick. Windows 8.1 32-bit is the installed OS. A full set of specs is available in a Google cached page of Acer’s premature information release (via Liliputing).

At the previously disclosed price of $329, the Acer Iconia W5 is a little bit more expensive than Dell’s Venue 8 Pro or the Lenovo Miix 8 and falls in line with the Toshiba Encore Windows tablet. Has Acer learnt from its previous Iconia W3 Windows tablet mistakes to create the best of the crop?

Blending into the crowd of 8 inch Windows tablets with the Z3740 processors. The Lenovo Miix2 looks the best so far due to the funky cover and pen :)
Toshiba Encore:

Same specs as Acer W4 (expect it has a 8Mp main camera as opposed to 5Mp on the Acer W4)
Available now
£250 with £25 of Windows Store vouchers from PCWorld online

For God's sake Acer, hurry up and release an updated version of the W510 with Baytrail….
