Treat this with a pinch of salt until we hear the official word from Apple, but strong rumours from a “reliable Asian source” suggest that the iPad 3 will launch in March 2012 and will feature a re-designed dock connector.

Japanese tech blog Macotakara states:

"(The) new iPad seems to have (a) re-designed dock connector. (The dock's) 30-pins and electricity specification will not be changed, but (the) shape will be smaller than the current 'iPad dock connector,' which (was) released April 2003."

The source also claims that the screen of the iPad 3 will be the same size as the existing model, and that consumers will be given the choice of buying either a black or white version of the tablet device. Other rumours suggest that the iPad 3 will sport a 2,048x1,536 Retina Display, compared to the iPad 2's 1,024x768 resolution.

While Macotakara believes that Chinese factories will rush to finish production on the iPad 3 by the end of January - due to Chinese New Year celebrations that run from January 22-28 - other sources believe that Apple won’t release the new iPad until the summer.

CNET, citing chip consulting firm Linley Group says that the iPad 3 won’t appear too early in the year because it features the quad-core A6 processor, which is still in production at the company’s Austin, Texas, plant. However, Apple did launch the iPad in April 2010 and the iPad 2 in March 2011, so March 2012 for the iPad 3 doesn’t seem like an unreasonable plan.

Huge increase in the screen resolution looks good - not so sure that retaining the 4:3 aspect ratio is a good idea. But even with the increased pixels, I'm guessing that the quad-core processor will make this quite the zippy beast.

What's the betting though that if Apple have changed the dock connector that there's going to be a lot of grumbling - especially if the iPhone5 uses the current one too. I'm guessing though that ‘phone5 and ’pad3 will use the same cabling - otherwise it'd be a rare misstep for Apple imho.
Cant wait for it , esp the resolution of the thing.
i do belive that android is the future, when you look on actual pricing of honeycomb devices, they are verry tempting and almost everyone can afforrd them now, archos just released 8" honeycomb tablet for under £200 at dixons
the changing of connector is going to make them very unpopular, although i guess its probably for a reason besides making people buy new peripherals (as, to be fair to apple they are not too bad for this) such as helping to reduce the overall size of the device?

My dad bought a 10“ Archos tablet for £199 from Tesco (they were cheaper in Phones 4U at £150 but never seemed to have stock) but didn't like the build quality, took it back and ended up with a smaller 7” Samsung galaxy tab (16gb with an additional 16gb mem card included) for £220 from Asda (again, these were cheaper in Tesco but couldn't seem to find stock). tbh, I'm tempted to get one of these myself, the build quality is far better than the Archos and the size difference between the two isn't as much of an issue as I first thought it would be.
