In spite of apparently selling out of iPad 2s almost immediately in the US, and the fear of component shortages resulting from the crisis in Japan, Apple has announced its latest tablet will be launched internationally, as planned, on 25 March - this Friday.

It will be available to order from the online Apple Store from 1am and at retailers from 5pm. As ever the size of queues outside Apple's flagship shops will be a barometer of demand for the product, but it will also be interesting to see how quickly the shops sell out of them, in view of the possible supply problems.

Anyway, here's the official pricing, which includes VAT. We've added the new pricing of the original iPad for comparison, and for additional comparison the 32GB Motorola Xoom is currently going for £499.99 Wi-Fi and $599.99 3G. It's also worth noting that the iPad 2 is cheaper than the original iPad when it was first launched by £30 on both 16GB models, £20 on the 32GB ones and £40 on the 64GB ones.

Model iPad 2 price (£) iPad price (£)
16GB Wi-Fi 399 329
32GB Wi-Fi 479 399
64GB Wi-Fi 559 479
16GB 3G 499 429
32GB 3G 579 499
64GB 3G 659 579

The Smart Cover will cost £35 for polyurethane and £59 for leather. The iMovie and GarageBand for iPad apps cost £2.99.

Steve Jobs couldn't resist a gloat in the press release: "While competitors are still struggling to catch up with our first iPad, we've changed the game again with iPad 2," he said. "We're experiencing amazing demand for iPad 2 in the US, and customers around the world have told us they can't wait to get their hands on it. We appreciate everyone's patience and we are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone."

It costs £100 for a 3G transceiver, eh Apple?
Prices are certainly cheaper than iPad 1

£429 is what Apple wanted for iPad 1 and we got further £10 added after VAT rise.

£399 this time around its a bit of a drop.

32GB Motorola Xoom is currently going for £499.99 Wi-Fi and $599.99 3G

Motorola is doing the same, pretty pricey for a 3G receiver…
Blimy, I could get a laptop for that sort of money, and it wouldn't be limited to Apple Apps!

I have to say that for us these are way to expensive! The average Joe on the street is not going to spend the same money on an iPad as a 1080 40" HGTV with Wireless Internet connection! iPads are still a gimic for most ordinary people.

Yes, I would lilke something like the iPad to read book/magazines/comics on, maybe even the odd video. Now for that I'd pay upto about £120 give or take a tenner. But I would want to be able to use Firefox, MS Word, and a few other Windows programs as well if it is going to be £330 or more!

The trouble with Apple is they are a bunch of Elitists. They like the fact only the well off can afford their products. They run their user base like a snobby club, and that is not something I would want to be a part of even if I had the money!

So as far as I'm concerned I'll wait for the Windows Tablet thank you very much, or just buy a lap top!
You said it in a way that would indicate no one have bought any iPads so far..

pple released the first iPad in April 2010, and sold 3 million of the devices in 80 days. During 2010, Apple sold 14.8 million iPads worldwide, representing 75 percent of tablet PC sales at the end of 2010.

That's a lot of average Joe's out there - 14.8 millions of them prefer iPad than 1080p TV? :P

I'm not saying its cheap but at the same time opposition is struggling to beat Apple on price big time. Not to mention the apps.

There won't be any good Windows tablet dude, OS isn't suitable for the touch screen - simple. All the half-baked attempts failed. I cannot find the video showing Balmer struggling with one running W7…
The current tablets are expensive considering that in most cases they are not primary PCs. Most people who tend to buy them already have a laptop or desktop and either are interested in gadgets or are better off.

On top of this most tablets are subsidised by long term credit in the form of phone contracts. In most non-western countries this is not the case.

Over the next few years as they get more powerful and cheaper will they eventually be considered a primary computer.

20 million tablets were sold last year but it is still dwarfed by laptop sales overall. The success of Android is important for tablets TBH. The smartphone market has only grown so massively due to the presence of cheap Android smartphones.

A lot of non-techy and non-gadgety people I know do not have a tablet and usually will have a cheap laptop or desktop for work processing and web browsing.

Edit!!

Come to thing of it none of my techy friends have a tablet ATM.
