Who wants to be a millionaire?

Both Microsoft and LG are trumpeting the sales of their latest gadgets today, with both the Kinect for Xbox 360 and Optimus One coincidentally topping the one million units sold mark on the same day. Kinect, however, achieved this feat in a quarter of the time.

Microsoft's controller-free motion sensor peripheral for its Xbox 360 games console took only ten days to top a million worldwide sales, putting it on pace to reach five million by the end of the year. Clearly it's going to be a big Christmas hit.

"This is a great start to the holiday season, and we will continue to work with our retailer partners to keep pace with high demand and deliver against our plan to sell more than 5 million Kinect sensors worldwide by the end of this year," said Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft.

Meanwhile the Optimus One has become the fastest-selling mobile handset in LG's history. 40 days after its official launch it, too has shipped a million units. The Optimus One is an Android 2.2 phone that seems unremarkable on most levels. It does seem to have lowered the cost of entry to Froyo, however, with ‘free' tariffs as low as £15 per month and standalone prices under £200.

"The versatile, powerful LG Optimus One was designed to provide an easy transition into the world of smartphones and as these numbers demonstrate, there is obviously a strong demand for this type of device," said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG mobile. "Optimus One seems to be what many customers were waiting for, proving that smartphones aren't just for early adopters anymore."
