Rumour round-up
The fabled Nexus Two handset, now believed to be called the Nexus S has been spotted on Best Buy's website but has mysteriously disappeared.
Phandroid discovered the handset on the retailer's website, which reportedly read: "The Nexus S. Available only at best Buy this holiday Season" but sadly there was no image.
Rumours of the phone's existence gained strength after Gizmodo reported a sighting in the wild and Engadget got a photo of the supposed handset built by Samsung and believed to be powered by Android Gingerbread.
The latest ‘appearance' has got people wondering whether the Nexus S is another name for the Nexus Two- although it is thought it probably is. Gigaom noted how ambitious the Nexus One was and believes its probably predecessor is not created in the same spirit and perhaps one could speculate the S name may reflect that.
According to the site, while the Nexus One aimed to make buying unlocked and unsubsidized phones the norm in Europe, it believes the Nexus S will be exclusive to Best Buy (initially at least) and locked to T-Mobile.
Various reports have suggested the hardware is based on Samsung's Galaxy S smartphone but could sport a 1.2GHz processor and be the first to get Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
Gigaom speculates the Nexus S is built not to offend Google's manufacturing and carrier partners to not be too ground-breaking unlike its edgy predecessor. While the Nexus S will probably prove handy for developers wanting a phone that is updated quickly, many are disappointed with Google's possible lack of desire to push the envelope with its second smartphone offering.
However, at this point there has been no official news from Google about its fabled handset, which could of course prove all the rumours wrong and come unlocked with magical USPs.
