Yesterday evening Asus Republic of Gamers launched the ROG Phone in the UK. At an event at the BelowZero Ice Bar in Mayfair, London, Asus announced that pre-orders of its gaming phone would open up today, Friday 16th Nov, with shipments starting from 14th December. Those interested in this device can pre-order at the Asus UK E-Shop, and for a limited time your pre-orders will be charged at £699 instead of the UK RRP of £799.

Asus originally showed off the ROG phone this summer at the Computex expo in Taiwan. HEXUS was there and experienced the device first-hand. It was delivered with a number of headline claims such as offering the "world's fastest" speed-binned 2.96GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC. Overall Asus said its new ROG styled smartphone was a "game changer". In its email to HEXUS, Asus reminds us of the key qualities of its ROG Phone:

  • Epic performance: World's fastest speed-binned 2.96GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, Qualcomm Adreno 630 and GameCool vapor-chamber cooling
  • Unbeatable visuals: 6-inch (2160 by 1080) AMOLED HDR display with ultrafast 90Hz refresh, 1ms response for smooth, blur-free gaming and 108% DCI-P3 gamut for vivid realism, always on support
  • Total control: Designed for comfortable gaming with unique side-mounted port, programmable ultrasonic AirTrigger sensors and powerful force-feedback system
  • Endless possibilities: Enhanced gaming experiences with optional TwinView Dock, Mobile Desktop Dock, and Gamevice controller with WiGig Dock

Other key tech specs of the device are that it comes with; up to 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM, a choice of 128GB / 512GB UFS2.1 storage, twin rear camera system featuring Sony flagship IMX363 12MP dual pixel image sensor and 120° wide-angle option, 8MP selfie camera, dual front-facing speakers, Hi-Res audio 192kHz/24-bit plus DTS and AudioWizard, triple mic, FM radio, GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS, Wi-Fi 802.11ad, BT 5.0, NFC, LTE, twin 4G SIM slots, IPX4 water resistance, rear fingerprint sensor (0.3 seconds unlock, supports 5 fingerprints), face recognition, Accelerator, E-Compass, Gyroscope, Proximity sensor, Ambient light sensor, Hall Sensor, Ultrasonic sensor for AirTriggers and grip press, 4,000mAh battery, USB Type-C, side mount connector, 3.5mm audio jack, and Android Oreo 8.1 pre-installed.

With all the above hardware at your disposal Asus says that the ROG Phone will deliver the best in mobile gaming with "consistent, smooth and stable frame rates with no lag, even during the toughest marathons".

The accessories available for the ROG Phone, mentioned in the bullet points above, are quite impressive in their scope and capabilities. Only yesterday Asus released a new video showcasing the 'ASUS Professional Dock' which provides a gigabit Ethernet connection, 2 USB-A ports and a UBC-C port with pass-through charging for your phone. This dock will work with some other USB Type-C phones too, see below.

Tell me I'm not the only one who thinks this device looks like an ugly, expensive waste of time, which majors in the perfection of playing an inferior alternative to PC or console games. (for more money, ironically)

Ugly… debatably subjective. It looks like an Asus ROG product, which is possibly better than looking like every other Smartphone, these days…

Expensive …. yes, but so are most phones these days. This is a Switch and a phone all in one, really, so possibly not far off on the pricing.

Waste of time… Depends how into mobile games you are, I s'pose.

Majors in the perfection of playing an inferior alternative to PC… No, that's a minor point. It's major aim is mobile gaming… specifically beating Razer, which it generally does on many points.

Either way, it's years away from my price bracket, so I don't have to care…!! :)
I see they're taking aim at the mid-range market.
