Conclusion

Fast, reliable and with excellent endurance credentials to boot, made possible by 3D V-NAND, the Samsung 845DC PRO is a high-quality datacentre-centric drive that's easy to recommend.

Samsung has pulled off a neat trick with the 845DC PRO SSD. It has found a way of circumventing the performance-related problems that occur in flash technology when moving to smaller-geometry processes, which is ordinarily needed to keep costs and energy consumption down.

The company's 3D V-NAND uses a larger process but is able to keep die area to a minimum by stacking cell arrays on top of one another. Endurance and speed are further enhanced by using charge-trap technology inside the transistors, leading to NAND that is faster, more energy-efficient and more reliable than planar- and floating-gate-based flash available today.

With the first-generation 3D V-NAND at the helm and endurance greatly improved by significant overprovisioning, the 800GB 845DC PRO is a prime candidate for use in environments where sustained steady-state performance matters.

Our benchmarks show that performance remains consistent and impressive even when purposely degraded. We can't comment on the value metric without pricing information, which Samsung will provide shortly, but the drive ticks many of the boxes required for use in workstations and servers.

Yet that's only one quiver in the PRO's bow.

Don't know what on earth you were trying to do with that but it's not right. Try 1 arrow in the quiver or 1 string in the bow.

Nice in depth review though.
Right Jeeves I would like 10 of those Right now !!

Great Review Tarinder, is the 3D V-NAND ever going to make it to consumer products in the near future?
The 850 PRO, I believe, has the second-generation V-NAND technology baked in.

Look like really impressive Drives, I'll wait until they are out and ‘Tested’ by others before getting one or two myself

It's actually 3D NAND Flash, designed for more storage, faster transfer rates, lower energy use and higher reliability.
I wonder where the 3D reminds me of? I think i'll take a trip down to Ivy Bridge to find out.
