Introduction

Crucial is one of the pioneers of the direct-to-customer Internet sales model. Click on the site and you will find memory upgrades that are compatible with most machines. If the part is available, Crucial, most likely, will stock it, such is the breadth of the catalogue.

The self-titled 'memory experts' launched a Ballistix line of high-performance memory a while back, primed to appeal to the enthusiast who'd usually look toward Corsair and OCZ for cutting-edge RAM. Ballistix was augmented with flashy (literally!) Tracer memory, which added some bling. Now, that Tracer series is available in three colours with LEDs to match.

Launched as a triple-channel pack for, ostensibly, Core i7 CPUs, Crucial's Ballistix Tracer DDR3-1,600, shipping with 8-8-8-24-2T timings, looks good on paper - hell, it looks good in real life. Let's see if it's style over substance.
