Canonical’s popular Linux distribution, Ubuntu has received a major update today with the release of Ubuntu 11.10

Available to download from immediate effect, the free operating system now runs the Linux 3.0+ kernel and has received a number of updates, including a new email client, a revamped interface and major upgrades to the Ubuntu Software Cetnre, including the ability for users to sell programs to other users. Low-end systems that don’t support 3D acceleration can also now benefit from the ability to fallback to a new 2D shell.

I dont know if I would consider the forcing of the unity UI on people an upgrade!

The UI is good for netbooks and tablets but it just doesnt feel right on my desktop! I really am thinking of changing distro over this!

But I now no longer have audio from the internal speakers in my laptop, which is infuriating.

How? 11.04 had a mode called ‘ubuntu classic’ and as far as I am aware this has been removed from 11.10.

Ahh it looks like ‘ubuntu classic’ mode has been removed but a quick google tells me you can install something called ‘GNOME3 classic (fallback) mode’.

I think I'll give this a try and let you guys know how I get on.
