Synology has today announced that it is making a trio of new DiskStation NAS devices available to buy worldwide. The DiskStation DS216se, DS216play and DS416 all become available from today and are priced between £99 and £330. The devices are aimed to provide great value to home and business users.

The entry level DS216se is a two bay NAS device which is said to be "ideal for starting your own cloud or creating a no-fuss and full-featured file server". Though entry-level the DS216se benefits from the powerful DiskStation Manager software with its built-in applications and handy add-on packages.

Synology's DS216se features an 800MHz processor and 256MB RAM. This NAS offers an average of over 102MB/sec reading and over 59MB/sec writing speed under RAID 1 configuration in Windows. It is eco friendly, consuming as little as 5.13 watts in hibernation mode and 13.73 watts while accessing data.

The DS216play is the successor of DS214play. It comes with a new dual-core 1.5GHz processor with hardware transcoding engine, and 1GB RAM. The upgraded processor enables DS216play to transcode H.265 4K videos. HEXUS wrote in greater detail about this new NAS when it was shown to us at IFA in September. Synology refer to this device as the "ultimate media centre."

Performance is quoted as an average 107MB/s reading and 91MB/s writing speed under RAID 1 configuration, in Windows. This device consumes as little as 6.83 watts in hibernation mode and 15.08 watts while accessing data.

At the top of the range of new devices that Synology made available today, is the four bay DS416, pictured above. This is the successor to the DS414 with upgraded hardware including a 1.4GHz dual-core processor with hardware encryption engine, 1GB RAM, dual LAN ports, three USB 3.0 ports (with one located on the front for easy quick access). According to the maker, the upgrade results in a 90 per cent gain in encrypted file reading and writing speeds.

Performance is quoted as follows; reading and writing speeds of 220MB/s and 140MB/s respectively with link aggregation enabled. Encrypted performance exceeds 146MB/s reading and 65MB/s writing. This device consumes as little as 10.14 watts in hibernation mode and 31.96 watts while accessing data.

As an owner of the DS414, there's very little changed between the 414 and 416. Glad I didn't hold out for it!
