Microsoft has just released and detailed the latest cumulative update for Windows 10. If you are on Windows 10 Version 1511 you should very soon receive update KB3140768. Those still on Windows 10 initial version, from July 2015, will receive KB3140745. Whichever flavour you are using, the updates are all centred around "quality improvements and security fixes", neither set of updates provides any new features this month.

Most Windows 10 users should be now using Version 1511. I just refreshed my desktop PC at the weekend, installing the initial version ISO from a backup, and it was updated a few hours later to version 1511. If I'd known my backup was that old I'd have just gone to download a new ISO, never mind. So what is improved and fixed in Windows 10 Version 1511 by applying KB3140768? Please check the bullet points below:

  • Improved support for Bluetooth, wearables, and apps accessing contacts.
  • Improved reliability in app installation and Narrator.
  • Improved performance for hibernation, content entry in apps, and downloading and installing updates.
  • Fixed issue that didn't allow login to an Xbox from a PC running Windows 10.
  • Fixed security issue created when attempting to play corrupted content.
  • Fixed security issue that could allow remote code execution while viewing a PDF in Microsoft Edge.
  • Fixed additional issues with .NET Framework, Internet Explorer 11, and networking.
  • Fixed additional security issues with Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer 11, USB storage driver, kernel mode drivers, .NET Framework, graphic fonts, OLE, secondary logon, PDF library, and Adobe Flash Player.

Please note that the full raft of updates as detailed above would be a 327MB download for x86 users, those who have installed Windows 10 64-bit face a 576MB download.

PC users still working with Windows 10 initial version as their OS will receive cumulative update KB3140745 very shortly, if they haven't got it already. This update fixes and improves the OS experience quality as follows:

  • Improved support for apps, smart card logon, dual Ethernet cards, and Appraiser.
  • Improved reliability for OS shutdown, group policy application, displays, virtual machines, and Windows Update.
  • Improved performance for content entry in apps, BitLocker, and update installation and notification.
  • Fixed issue with printing in Internet Explorer 11.
  • Fixed security issue created when attempting to play corrupted content.
  • Fixed security issue that could allow remote code execution while viewing a PDF in Microsoft Edge.
  • Fixed additional issues with system sounds, file properties, spellcheck, logon, and Internet Explorer 11.
  • Fixed additional security issues with Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer 11, USB storage driver, kernel mode drivers, .NET Framework, graphic fonts, OLE, secondary logon, and PDF library.

Windows 10 Mobile

In other related news Windows Mobile was also updated yesterday and it is nearing its final release status. VentureBeat reports that Windows 10 for mobiles will start to roll out to legacy Lumia handsets later this month. To begin with users will have to initiate the update on their Windows Phone 8.1 smartphones. Later it is planned that the latest mobile OS will be pushed to end users of compatible devices.

Rather disappointed to see the cumulative updates idea being back-ported to updates for older version of Windows. :(
I wonder if they will ever release an update, that fixes the issue with cumulative updates either getting stuck when downloading (if they download at all) and in some cases, repeatedly failing to install…
Windows mobile 10 - about time, although maybe if it works well unlike the 950/950xl launch release , then the wait maybe worth it.
Fixed additional security issues with Microsoft Edge

Here's a 100% fix for you MS, just remove the damn thing.
Found a lovely bug with it the other day, if you use Outlook web service then Edge will not allow you to make attatchments !
2min after installing firefox, worked fine. Muppets.
