Skype’s the limit

Skype has joined with Facebook to allow its users to post news to the site and call Facebook friends directly from their mobiles.

The partnership will allow Facebook users in Skype to call and SMS their Facebook friends directly on their mobiles and landlines, providing their Facebook friends are also Skype contacts.

Skype users will also be able to keep up to date with their Facebook News Feed, letting them post status updates plus comment and ‘like' other updates directly from Skype. Thus both services stand to benefit as Skype should gain more users and Facebook can add free calls to its list of functions.

According to Skype, video calling accounted for approximately 40 percent of all Skype-to-Skype minutes in the first half of 2010. It also reckons its users spend a collective 520 million minutes every day talking to people on Skype.

People excited about the Facebook hook-up downloading Skype for the first time will get a free trial of group video calling in beta too.

Skype for Windows has now got a simplified UI with real-time search, letting people dedicate pictures and avatars to their contacts, plus add ‘mood messages'.

The company has also boosted its call quality, while automatic call recovery should help rectify some annoying internet connection issues.
