Germany-based Cherry, best known for its keyboards and keyswitches, has just launched a new wired mouse aimed at professionals, "where rapid work is required". The Cherry MC 4000 is an ambidextrous design that offers an adjustable DPI high-quality optical sensor, twin colour illumination, six buttons plus scroll wheel, and a large 360-degree sliding pad on its base. This new wired mouse has an MSRP of €30 and becomes available from September.

According to Cherry, the key benefits offered by the MC 4000 wired mouse can be summarised as follows:

  • Reliable cable mouse with 6 buttons
  • The all-round 360° smooth surface ensures secure and stable mouse movements
  • High-quality optical sensor and adjustable DPI resolution for two speeds
  • High-speed motion detection at 60ips (1.5 metres per second)
  • Illumination colour depends on the set resolution (1000 dpi = blue, 2000 dpi = red)
  • Red/blue illumination on the sides, the scroll wheel, and the DPI switch
  • Optimized for professional requirements where speed is a factor
  • Symmetrical design - suitable for left- and right-handed users

Looking at its physical qualities, the Cherry MC 4000 weighs about 130g and measures 116 x 64.5 x 34.5mm. Cherry has fitted a 1.8m (6ft) USB cable to the mouse which should be plenty for most people. In terms of reliability, Cherry claims the mouse buttons offer a life time of 10 million clicks and the scroll wheel can endure 150,000 cycles. Buyers receive a two year warranty. The MC 4000 consumes a maximum of 100mA in operation.

So what can you do with the six buttons? It seems like the button functionality is not configurable. Cherry mentions that its button functions include; "buttons for DPI switching, browser navigation, and Windows Panel". That last one must be equivalent to hitting the Windows key on the keyboard. Usually browser navigation buttons on a six button mouse are used for back-forward browsing actions.

130g for only a 6 button mouse, too heavy for me.
I expect Linux users can configure the extra buttons using xbindkeys and xte.

Oh please, there are less than a 1000 gaming professionals on the whole planet. It's aimed at normal gamers. It might be great for pros but even if the sold a mouse to every single one they wouldn't make the investment back. It's just a mouse.

With just two settings for 1,000 or 2,000 dpi??!!
That's not even average gamer level. Heck, I'm at work right now, using 3600dpi on a mouse that does up to 8,000…

They also never said gaming professionals… just professionals, although ‘gaming professional’ would include all the Devs and I promise you there are over a thousand of them on the planet… I mean, it takes about six million just to make a single Assassins Creed game, judging by how long their credits are!!

It is a cheap-end working mouse.
