Well known UK high street retailer and catalogue shop Argos has launched its own Android tablet in time to be snapped up by Xmas shoppers. Argos has called its tablet the MyTablet and it will be available to buy from tomorrow from the Argos website, Argos App and Argos high street stores. It’s a 7-inch device and costs just £99.99, that’s £20 less than Tesco’s recently revealed and similarly sized Hudl tablet.

Argos says its tablet will be targeted at teenagers and is being made available in silver or pink finishes. Argos managing director John Walden said “Millions of people have bought tablets during the last year but there is still around 75 percent of the UK population without one.” Also Argos would like to remind people that there’s only 70 days until Christmas.Reuters quotes market research company EMarketer figures, estimating that tablet sales have gone up 39 per cent year on year.

Tesco sold 35,000 Hudls in the 2 days following its launch – that’s the fastest selling tablet it has ever had on its shelves. Argos must be eagerly anticipating a similar retail boost. There’s a lot in common between the Argos MyTablet and Tesco Hudl devices; the 7-inch screen, the Android OS and microSD expansion. So let’s take a closer look at the MyTablet specs and see exactly what is on offer:

  • Screen: 7-inch 1024 x 600 pixels resulting in 169ppi
  • Processor: dual-core 1.6GHz processor
  • Cameras: 2MP rear facing, 0.3MP front facing
  • Memory and Storage: 8GB built-in storage and microSD slot for up to 32GB expansion
  • Battery: quoted 5 hours of video playback
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Micro-USB and HDMI
  • Colours: silver or pink
  • OS and Apps: Android 4.2.2 and the Argos Android app pre-installed

You can see from the above specs that the Tesco Hudl tablet beats the Argos MyTablet on many points. The key improvements on Tesco’s tablet include; a higher pixel density screen with 1440 x 900 pixels, a quad-core processor, more built-in storage at 16GB, a better pair of cameras and significantly better battery life meaning you can watch videos for up to 9 hours between charges. So for £20 difference there is quite a lot of improvements available.

It's like a rebranded Archos tablet or something?
Would rather pay the 20 notes extra for the hudl, argos specs suck.

Ditto
This sounds more like the spec that people were expecting the Hudl to come out with, at their price point, did Tesco drop this and then the maker go shopping it to other chains?

Personally, I'd rather pay £80 more than the hudl for a Nexus 7, but that doesn't mean there isn't a market, and likely a large one, one the hudl or Argos thingy.

Reuters
Millions of people have bought tablets during the last year but there is still around 75 percent of the UK population without one," said Argos managing director John Walden.

Market research company EMarketer estimates there are 19.7 million tablet users in the UK, up 39 percent year-on-year.
Hmmmph, statistics. If the quoted figures attributed to Reuters are correct, 19.7 million users is 25% of the UK population, putting the population at 80 million. I know there's an alleged “flood” of immigrants, legal. or otherwise, but last time I looked, it was more like 61 million.

But seriously, there is a large market for budget tablets, be it hudl or Argos, or anything else, and the more the merrier. What the spec needs to be very much depends what the user wants to do. I use mine as little more than a lightweight, portable web browser and document viewer, and it doesn't need to be a powerhouse. The screen might not be Retina, for example, but it's perfectly adequate for anything I want it for.

There are lots of people that just might buy in at under £100 but won't at over that, no matter the difference in spec. After all, you can do the “just a bit more” logic right up to the iPad. I've done it more than a few times. :embarrassed: …… (on other product types, certainly not with the iPad)
