We are expecting to see the new version of the popular Nexus 7 Android tablet paraded up and down at the Google press event on Wednesday. Luckily for the impatient it's easy enough to see some pretty clear pictures of the new ASUS-made mini-tablet already, mainly thanks to the prolific smartphone leaker @evleaks (celebrating its first anniversary).

New and old, respectively

You can see the new Nexus 7 and old (current) version side by side above. The new version is longer and thinner than the current version and estimated to measure 204.4mm x 115.6mm. It is said that the tablet will be available in capacities of both 16GB and 32GB at launch time. The new Nexus 7 looks pretty slim but we have no measurements or estimates for its thickness right now. Also of note, appearance-wise, you can see the back is now dimple-free.

Turning to the tech specs of the new tablet we don't have much more confirmed other than the screen resolution of 1920 x 1200 mentioned by the Best Buy back to school advert. Also that ad lists the 16GB model as being available for $229. It will be available on 'Tuesday', which is Tuesday 30th July. The advert is a leaflet which is scheduled to be distributed on Sunday 28th July according to PhoneArena.

Other tech specs rumours/speculation are as follows; Android 4.3 will be installed (because the clock in the press render says 4.30), the back facing camera is 5MP, a Snapdragon S4 Processor will be utilised, 4GB of DDR3L RAM is installed and dual speakers are equipped.

We will be back with all the official specs and details when the new tablet is launched.

Hmm might just be time to upgrade my ageing Acer Iconia A100
Nice upgrade. I especially like the 4GB of RAM. That's starting to look like a real modern PC. Still, my current Nexus 7 is good enough for me. The only things I can currently think of which which will make me buy a new tablet are a larger screen (8") in the same size / weight case, full Windows in a decent size / weight tablet, or Android gaming becoming more serious and the games I like requiring beefier hardware.
4GB is unlikely at this price point and current tablet evolution. 2GB is more likely.

Its resolution is higher than my desktop monitor :/
Not sure I like the large bezel at both ends… I don't know why tablets don't have minimal bezel on 3 sides and then a holdable one at one side with any buttons centrally placed on that side. The screen image can obviously rotate so it'd please left and right handed people, 7" are easy to hold one handed and most of the time this is what you'll do because the other hand is doing the poking…

4GB seems unlikely, I wasn't aware that RAM density had doubled recently, so that leaves 2x chips which would be bad for battery…
Does that mean we'll get 4.3 on the current 7 soon?
