Toshiba has today announced a new Windows 8 Pro tablet aiming at a similar market to Microsoft’s Surface Pro machine. Toshiba says the tablet is “designed for business users” and that “pre-installed security and data management features enabling secure remote management”. The new tablet, called the Toshiba WT310 features an 11.6-inch 1080p screen, an Intel Core processor and comes with a specially designed stylus with handwriting recognition software.

Toshiba WT310 specifications

  • Processor: “latest Intel Core processor” is equipped
  • Screen: 11.6-inch full HD anti-glare screen
  • Storage: SSD drive, so it’s less susceptible to impact damage and “perfect for those long-haul business trips”
  • Connectivity: 1x full size USB 3.0, 1x HDMI micro, SD card slot, Wi-Fi b/g/n or a/g/b/n Intel Wireless Display, Bluetooth® 4.0, optional embedded HSPA+/LTE module
  • Security: Intel anti-theft software, Trusted Platform Module (TPM v1.2), Remote management
  • Accessories: Digitizer pen (on selected models) “perfect for meeting minutes or seminars”
  • Physical: 229x189x12.4 mm, 825g, steel-grey metallic finish
  • OS: Windows 8 Pro 64-bit

Optional docking cradle

In addition to the above mentioned stylus Toshiba plan to make available an optional docking cradle which will feature additional ports for connecting a keyboard, mouse and external hard drive. The cradle will also feature; HDMI ports (perhaps for a larger desktop screen), a full size USB 3.0 port, an SD card slot and a Gigabit LAN port. That sounds like a really nice accessory to come home to, which will bring comfortable desktop frills to working upon your tablet data.

Back in 2011 we saw the ancestor of this tablet; the Japan-only Oak Trail Atom powered, Windows 7 based, Toshiba TW310/C but software and hardware have definitely moved on quite a long way in the newer version.

The release date for the Toshiba WT310 is going to be during Q2 2013, which is pretty soon. Unfortunately Tosh didn’t indicate any pricing for this tablet or range of tablets so we will have to wait and see about that. The press release tries hard to position this tablet as a business device, so it probably won’t be a cheap option.

Looks great and with a good specification. However, 825g is a bit heavy for my liking.
And as usual with Sony, it will be overpriced.
