HP has introduced its Slate 2 Tablet PC today, primarily touting expanded touch capabilities and improved multitasking performance.

Powered by an Intel Atom Z670 CPU running at 1.5GHz, the Slate 2 adopts a capacitive 8.9in diagonal WSVGA touchscreen, boasting a wide-viewing angle, and a resolution of 1024x600 or 1024x768 - depending on the application in use. With a battery life of up to 6 hours, the Slate 2 is kitted-out with 2GB DDR2 RAM, and up to 64GB SSM (Solid State Module) mSATA storage, depending on model.

OS duties are taken up by either Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit) or Windows 7 Professional (32-bit), and Intel's Graphics Media Accelerator 600, handles graphics duties. The Slate 2 offers 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi support, as well as a Bluetooth 4.0 + HS combo.

Dan Forlenza, VP and GM of the Commercial Managed IT Segment at HP said: "HP is dedicated to the tablet PC category and continues to listen to customers and improve the product in ways that best address their business needs. The HP Slate includes the right mix of rich features, support for custom-built applications, and the security and connectivity needed for today's highly mobile and rigorous day-to-day professional environment."

Worldwide availability is expected this month, with prices starting at $699 US Dollars.

Must be end-of-day cynicism, but reading the spec all I got was "netbook that we've removed the keyboard from and are going to charge you extra for the privilege".

Strangely, I'd more interested/excited if this was a new TouchPad (so running webOS).
bet apple sue for it looking too much like an ipad….
Not quite the typical netbook, since it uses whatever-trail is the successor to the Z5x0 lower-power atoms. Given the better-than-average ram and some solid state storage it'll probably be quite reasonable, although it seems a little pointless to release a new x86 tablet before Windows 8 comes out (IMNSHO).

I'd be interested if the touch screen is better than the one on the latest fujitsu stylistic, though…

It would need to sell well first. I think Apple know the biggest threat to them currently is Samsung Android tablets - hence the lawyers are out.
Wonder if you can add a keyboard, like my (also HP) TC1100. ?

& when are we going to have some 14" tablets - Kno aside - that have the same screen dimensions as A4?
