Shure launch with a cool party

Nick Haywood has ears pot-holers have got lost in… a mighty challenge for Shure’s new gaming earphones!

Noise cancelling headphones… ever tried them? I have and, to various extents, they’ve been ‘ok’ to ‘a bit crap’. The basic principle is that the headphones introduce noise of equal amplitude but exactly out of phase with external sound to cancel it out. The principle, if you’ll excuse the pun, is sound… but how it works in reality is another matter. One set, and I won’t name names, didn’t seem to do anything, whilst another seemed to have the balance all wrong and the anti-noise made me feel as if my ears were being pulled inside out.

So I was full of pre-conceived ideas when I turned up for Shure’s E series earphone launch event, at the rather exclusive Cuckoo Club in the heart of London. Alongside the chance to win a PSP or a DS in WipEout Pure and Crashday. Just getting near a PSP for a go on WipEout was a challenge in itself, though I did get a respectable 2nd place time on Crashday… but then, being the easily distractible journo that I am, a chance to play with the entirety of Shure’s range lured me away.

The evening passed very nicely with Paul Crognale from Shure taking me through their entire range, from the entry level E2Gs right up to the mind-bogglingly good E5c headphones, which, Paul assures me are worn by artists like Robbie Williams when they do their live performances. A highlight of the evening was the simply amazing human beat-box, Shlomo. This guy is simply stunning and has even appeared on Later with Jools Holland.

Shlomo, suitably decked out in a pair of E5c headphones, first stunned us all with a beat-box version of The Prodigy’s Out Of Space… now if you know that track, it’ll give you a damn good idea of how simply bloody amazing Shlomo is. And if that weren’t enough, for his second set he used TWO microphones to not only beat-box, but also give a bassline hum to his tracks using his throat… how the guy didn’t implode I have no idea…brilliant stuff.

But I digress… we’re here to have a look at the Shure E2g earphones… read on.
