Strong sales of Kinect since launch in November 2010 were the highlight of Microsoft's quarterly earning's call this week, with the report claiming that the camera peripheral has become the "fastest-selling consumer electronics device in history."

News from the earnings call reveals that Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices division, which also includes PC games, Zune, Windows Phone 7, and consumer software, has taken $3.7 billion in revenue in the quarter ended Dec. 31, up 55 percent from $2.4 billion in 2009.

Microsoft says that the camera periperhal has shifted 8 million units in the first 60 days of release, breaking its 5 million estimate. Over the Christmas period, Kinect was in short supply at retailers world-wide, and Microsoft says it expects further shortages at retail in the coming months.

Kinect-enabled games have been scarce since the initial batch of launch titles, which included the likes of Kinect Sports and Kinect Adventures, but rumours from a Microsoft insider this week suggest that a new batch of big titles are coming this April, on top of the four confirmed first party games in 2011 - Codename D, Forza Motorsport 4, Haunt and Project Draco.

It's also believed that Microsoft will soon release an official SDK and Kinect drivers for Windows, enabling third party developers to create Kinect-enabled games for PC.
