Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak will become available to purchase and download via Steam on Wednesday, 20th January (as we have mentioned before). In a last minute effort to kindle your sci-fi desert RTS desires Blackbird Interactive/Gearbox Software have released a launch trailer just ahead of the release.

As followers of this game's development will be aware, Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak takes players to the deserts of Kharak "where danger lurks over every dune". Before you can find your Homeworld, and being your journey amongst the stars (like in the original Homeworld 3D space RTS series) you must first unlock the secrets of the desert. It is worth reminding fans of the Homeworld series that Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak was developed by Blackbird Interactive, a studio founded by veterans of the Homeworld and Company of Heroes franchises - but it will be a ground-based sci-fi RTS game.

An interesting nugget concerning the gameplay in this upcoming RTS was featured in a Kotaku report earlier today. In the Homeworld series it is usual for your battling forces to continue from mission to mission. So if a mission proved pretty punishing - but you scraped through - that would set you up for a difficult following mission with your depleted force. However a new menu option in Deserts of Kharak allows players to start each mission "with a default squad", if  preferred.

The release of Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak on Steam isn't long off. With the release date looming, the developers have a special offer for pre-order customers. Those who pre-order can get a copy of the Homeworld Remastered Collection for free. Alternatively, if you already own that collection, you can instead receive 20 per cent off your Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak pre-order.
