PC gaming hardware and lifestyle specialist Razer has launched a pair of new headsets. The Razer Hammerhead BT and Hammerhead iOS headsets are compact in-ear headsets: one a wireless version (using Bluetooth 4.1), and the other wired and aimed at Apple iOS device users.

"The Razer Hammerhead line of in-ear headphones and headsets are lauded for their big sound in a highly portable form factor," said Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and CEO. "We are excited to expand our Hammerhead audio experience with a Bluetooth wireless option for increased mobility and a Lightning Connector version for iOS device users."

Looking first at what these headsets have in common, they both feature 'class leading' custom-tuned 10mm Neodymium dynamic audio drivers. Inside the driver units are aluminium acoustic chambers, enhancing music reproduction while adding to durability, says Razer. Whichever you buy you will receive a carry case containing additional ear bud sizes.

Razer Hammerhead BT uses the Qualcomm aptX codec for low-latency, high-quality audio. An in-line remote and microphone is included in the design for phone call pickup and music track selection. Compatible with both Android and iOS devices, the Hammerhead BT offers up to 8 hours of battery life and takes about 2 hours to charge up. (160mAH rechargeable Li-Po battery.)

Razer Hammerhead for iOS connects via Apple's Lightning Connector to provide clear audio via a custom-tuned, digital-to-analogue converter (DAC). In this case the in-line remote/mic can invoke and command Siri, in addition to the Hammerhead BT standard functionality. An iOS companion app facilitates customizable or pre-configured equalizer settings.

Razer says both headsets are available now online at Razserzone.com in the US. (I noticed that the iOS version wasn't purchasable for me, instead there was a 'Notify Me' button.) Pricing is set at US$99.99 / €109.99 for either headset model. Worldwide availability is scheduled for later this month.

“Compatible with both Android and iOS devices”

So no Windows phone then? Also no Windows laptop or desktop support?
I must be misunderstanding what ‘wireless’ means

Not sure what there is to misunderstand, they're wireless to the phone. But they have also made a wired Lightning version of them specifically for iOS.

What is disappointing is the long charge vs use time, Battery technology still sucks :(

Egh, actually I'd argue that it's the wireless tech that sucks in this case - wireless uses a lot of battery power in general. Lower power wifi would be great, it's not like these earphones should need 100 metres range or something.

Battery tech does suck though.

True, Wireless still requires quite a large amount of power to operate. Roll on the Nuclear Diamond Batteries, woo!
