New market

Residing, as they do, at the cheap and cheerful end of the PC market, netbooks don't initially jump out as ripe for upgrading. Most people probably expect to just upgrade the whole system when they consider it obsolete.

Memory specialist Crucial begs to differ, however, and will be launching SSD (solid state drive) upgrades designed specifically for netbooks by the end of the year.

The maximum capacity for the PCI-Express interface is 64GB and for PCI-Express mini is 32GB.

There's no pricing available right now but we understand that they will be priced at a level that you would expect when targeting a market that's only shelled out £300 on their system.

While many people may well still choose just upgrade the whole thing, but in these recessed times there's a good chance the netbook upgrade market will receive a fair bit of interest.

Here are some shots of a 32GB PCI-E mini and a 64GB PCI-E next to a nine inch Dell Inspiron 910, showing where the SSD goes, and a business card for scale.
