Matrox C900 single slot graphics card supports nine FHD displays

Matrox has launched the C900 graphics card. This card is claimed to be the world's first single slot solution capable of powering nine 1920 x 1080 displays at 60Hz. The product is targeted at those wishing to drive 3x3 or 9x1 video walls for digital signage or control rooms.

"Three-by-three configurations are the sweet spot for many digital signage installations and control room video walls," said Caroline Injoyan, business development manager, Matrox Graphics Inc. "Now with C900, for the first time, nine Full HD displays can be driven from a single-slot card and system integrators can easily offer a turnkey solution to power three-by-three video walls."

Users wanting to set up digital signage systems in retail, corporate, entertainment and hospitality environments as well as control room video wall solutions in security, process control and transportation could well find the compact single slot design and low power consumption of 75W very appealing.

We don't have the full hardware spec of the Matrox C900 as yet. However we do have the following morsels of information:

  • Support for up to 9x FHD 1980 x 1080 pixel displays, provides a total desktop resolution of 5760x3240 in a 3x3 display configuration, for example.
  • PCI Express 3.0 x16 interface
  • 4GB of graphics memory
  • 9x mini-HDMI connectors (support audio)
  • DirectX 12 and OpenGL 4.4 compliant
  • Can be synchronised with an additional C900 card or C680 6x FHD card to power 18 or 15-screen video walls.

Helping users tweak their multi-display setups to their liking will be the included Matrox PowerDesk software. This is said to be a comprehensive suite allowing such niceties as bezel management and EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) management for quick multi-monitor configuration.

The Matrox C900 graphics card will be strutting its stuff for the first time in public at the ISE 2016 next week (Amsterdam RAI, Tuesday 9 - Friday 12 Feb, stand 11-F48). It will become available to purnchase in Q2 2016

Intriguingly, the Matrox product page for the C900 specifies that you have to drive “3, 6 or 9 synchronised displays” - not sure if that means other numbers simply aren't supported, or can be driven but not synchronised? Possibly something to do with the clock generators an HDMI output needs? Could it work by generating 3 separate virtual display surfaces then using just three clock generators, each driving 3 monitors with the surface tiled across them? Wish I new more about GPU output architecture ;)

The C680 board mentioned in the article looks interesting - a lower end AMD GPU with (essentially) an eyefinity 6 set up (6x displayport outputs). Depends how much it costs when it comes to market, but it could be a good product for the productivity sector….

On 9 screens?! I doubt it ;) Does rather depend which AMD GPU is under the hood though: I'm guessing that to hit 75W it'd either have to be a low-clocked Bonnaire or Tahiti, or a well-clock Oland, although it could be Cape Verde-based. Given it's got 4GB GDDR5 though, a 256bit card might be more likely? I'm not sure if 1GB GDDR5 chips are out there…?

hahaha, some people have gone haywire with the ‘But can it run Crysis’ swag line. Why on earth would you buy a special graphics card like that for $500 then run Crysis on low frame rates on a single 720p monitor. This is the same thing as buying a firepro card for gaming.
