James Bond 007: From Russia With Love

“The name’s Haywood, Nick Haywood.”… Ok, will someone please tell me why the women all walk off laughing when I say that?

Now I’ve already covered James Bond 007: From Russia With Love extensively in our HEXUS.gaming Hands On Preview when I was over in Leipzig at which stage JB was still in the final stages of development. It has to be said that what I saw there was pretty impressive and Electronic Arts were obviously aiming at producing something far better than a bog-standard film license game. In fact, the efforts they’ve made to make this game as true to Bond as possible did seem, at the time, a little over the top… They’d managed to get Sean Connery to re-voice his role, they’d licensed the use of his likeness, they’d even written some new music in keeping with the original score and the re-recorded that and the original stuff with a full blown orchestra at stupidly huge cost!

Now I’m a big Bond fan who firmly believes that Moore, Dalton, Lazenby and Brosnan just don’t hold a candle to the original Bond played by Connery and what I’d like to see is a game that captures the atmosphere and humour of the early Bond films whilst also giving me all the action and excitement too. With the hands on play I’d been given by EA, it looked as if they might just pull it off but how would a modern gaming audience be sucked into what is essentially a film license over 40 years old? Have EA managed to pull of an ambitious attempt at bringing the best Bond on the silver screen to the PS2’s screen? Is James Bond 007: From Russia With Love going to leave us shaken and not stirred? Time to don the tuxedo, load up the PP7 and find out…
