Google has released a beta version of Chrome 15, allowing users to play with a revamped New Tab page.

The New Tab page, seen above, now displays apps, bookmarks and most visited sites within individual sections, allowing users to switch between views in two different manners - either using the arrows located on the side of the window, or using the section labels at the bottom of the window.

Google is convinced that the fresh look simplifies visual appearance, and makes it easier and more intuitive to manage apps, bookmarks and most visited sites. There are also some tips provided, to make the most of the New Tab page:

  • To rearrange apps, just drag and drop them on the page.
  • To create a new apps section, drag an app to the bottom of the page until a new apps section appears. You can rename this section by double-clicking the label. For example, you can create a section of apps for "Work" (full of productivity apps) and a section for "Play" (full of games).
  • To remove items from any section on the page, start dragging them to the bottom right of the page. A trash can will appear, where you can drop the item to remove it.
  • To see the tabs you've just closed, click "Recently closed" on the bottom right of the page.

Or, like happened to me, you can wait for Chrome to self-update. Didn't half give me a shock when I brought up a new tab to get to Hexus, only to be greeted with the new UI. It's now telling me that I've got “15.0.874.21 beta”, which I assume is the latest version.

It's times like this - imho - that the silent-self-update feature of Chrome is a bit of a mixed blessing. Like the new UI though.
When will google stop using the word beta in its releases….
Argh, too many versions already. It's only been around for three years. IE's been around for 16 years and that's only on v10. And Windows has been around for 26 years and is also only on v10 (excluding server/CE version).

Technically you could argue Windows is only on version 6

Windows 9x were all 4.x
2k/XP were NT 5.0 and 5.1 repsectively
and Vista, 7 and 8 are 6, 6.1 and 6.2

by that logic Linux has only just hit version 3
I'd like to know how to turn the new tab page off. I don't want to run apps in my browser. I want to browse and usually when I need a new tab I want my home page (Google) to load
